FAQs
1. Do I have to register my daughter for try-outs or can we walk-in?
Please register for try-outs. Even if your daughter is unsure about whether she wants to play but wants to see how the try-outs go, please register.
2. Does everyone make a team? Are there 'A' and 'B' teams?
The girls will be evaluated during try-outs. All grade levels will have at least one team of 10 players. If there are enough interested girls and parent volunteer coaches for a second team, we will make another team. However, if there are more than 10 girls that try-out but not enough for a second team, there may be cuts. In the RYSI program, the 'Green' team is the 'A' team, and the 'White' team is the 'B' team.
3. Does my daughter need to come to both try-outs?
Ideally, yes. But, we understand that conflicts can come up. Please try to make at least one try-out. If your daughter cannot attend either try-out for her grade level, but wants to play this season, please contact
[email protected]
4. My daughter has never played basketball before, should she try-out?
Yes! There is no charge for try-outs. After try-outs, you can determine whether the level of play is appropriate for your daughter.
5. How competitive is league play? What is the time commitment?
The Jersey Basketball League (JBL) runs two divisions for girls -- Gold and Silver. The Gold Division is very competitive with teams from Madison, Chatham, Morristown, Summit, Westfield, etc. The Silver Division is also competitive with teams from smaller school districts and 'B' teams.
Given the competitive nature of the JBL, we ask that the girls make the RYSI team their primary athletic commitment during the season. For grades 4 and 5 teams, the girls need the repetition of fundamentals and instruction on team concepts. For grades 6-8, the girls need reinforcement of fundamentals and to practice playing against man and zone defenses, and pressing. We understand that the girls play other sports and have other extracurricular activities, but the parent volunteer coaches need girls at practices to be ready for games. If a team is continually having 6-7 girls at practices, it will be very difficult to win games in the JBL.
6. When and where are practices and games?
Practices -- after the try-outs are over and teams have been made, your coach will contact you and ask about any standing conflicts. The coach will do the best he/she can to make a practice schedule that avoids players' conflicts. Generally, there will be 2 practices/week, and each practice will be 1.5 hours at a gym in town.
Games -- games are scheduled by the JBL. There are 14 games in the season, beginning the first week of December and ending by mid-February. 7 games will be home games, and 7 games will be away games. Away games can be in Somerset, Morris, Hunterdon and Union counties.
7. Is there equal playing time?
Playing time rules are dictated by the JBL. Traditionally, 4th and 5th grade teams are required to provide equal playing time in the first half of games. For 6th-8th grade teams, playing time is at the coach's discretion. If your daughter plays on an RYSI team this season, your coach will inform you about the playing time rules.
8. I would like to coach or help coach my daughter's team. How can I volunteer?
Each team will have one head coach and 1-2 assistant coaches. If you are new to the RYSI program and haven't coached before, please contact
